OSCAR MURILLO | DAVID ZWIRNER | LONDON

Binary function, Oscar Murillo’s first solo exhibition at David Zwirner, London, includes paintings, an installation and a new video by the London-based, Colombian artist. The video projection depicts a street scene in Murillo’s hometown of La Paila, Colombia, in which people are seen chatting, drinking and dancing to live music. Filmed by the artist on New Year’s Day, its footage shifts between documentary and experimental styles, using both wide-angle and detail shots that, at times, abstract the figures’ bodies into a chaotic arrangement of imagery, color and movement. On view are his renowned large-scale paintings, which incorporate materials that change and react over time, with canvases literally moved around the artist’s studio to accumulate sole imprints, fingerprints and dust. The exhibition continues a recent development within Murillo’s practice in which multimedia works are grouped together within clear plastic tray frames. Comprising wide-ranging imagery and materials, such as small-scale drawings, screen prints and the artist’s own travel photographs, these compositions vary in their degree of engagement with the processes of painting, drawing, screen printing and installation. A major new installation in the upper galleries comprises large, heavily painted black canvases – made of several sewn-together fragments and reminiscent of leather hides – suspended across the gallery, piled on top of one another on steel pallets, and also strewn across tables.

Currently on view at David Zwirner is East of Eden, Philip-Lorca diCorcia’s latest photographic investigation on contemporary humanity and its position within a complexly interwoven cultural setting.  This series reflects diCorcia’s interpretation of a search for equilibrium after the deep impacts of the Financial Crisis in 2007, both during and after the Bush administration.

Considered one of the most influential contemporary photographers currently working, diCorcia is widely recognized for his potent juxtapositions in which obliquely evident narratives merge with his earnest testimonial approach. Between documentation and a more orchestrated, fictive presence, the New York-based artist equally glorifies and satirizes subject matter frequently positioned in enigmatic settings.

Similar to Hustlers – his 2013 exhibition, where diCorcia turned his camera to male prostitutes around Los Angeles and captured them in their particular environments in exchange for their actual hourly rates – East of Eden seems to be the outcome of an ambitious visual and contextual investigation.  Evident from its title, the show builds a bridge between the financial meltdown and the Book of Genesis, tying certain motifs and characters in the said text with this contemporary case.  Underlining how matters related to mankind, from carnal desires to untamable greed, remain timeless, diCorcia’s photographs of the human condition beguile the eye with their striking ensembles, while leaving behind many more questions yet to be answered.

Genesis, for example depicts a toddler enchantedly jumping on a bed that has a doll stuck inside its sheets, in what seems to an upper class winter house. The Hamptons, on the other hand, strikes with its camera perspective and curious narrative, composing a bitter humor through two dogs, seemingly of valuable breeds, gazing into a pornographic image on a flatscreen TV in a highly prosperous domestic interior.

Cain and Abel re-imagines the Biblical brother figures as two male lovers caressing each other under the glance of a nude pregnant woman, a strong reference to their mother Eve. While in the original text Cain is depicted murdering Abel, in diCorcia’s retelling, the duo appears as the agents of an affair overshadowed by their mother’s presence, an attempt to underline the overlooked affinities between each contradiction.

THE UPPER ROOM: Reading the Surface

To coincide with the London auctions, on Tuesday June 25 & Wednesday June 26 the gallery will remain open until 6:30 PM.

Opening to coincide with the London gallery’s first solo exhibition of works by Donald Judd, Reading the Surface takes a minimalist approach to the notion of surface. With artists including Nina Beier, Ryan Gander, Bob Law, George Henry Longly, John McCracken, and Maaike Schoorel, the show considers different attitudes to the surfaces of artworks, focusing on the dialectic between viewing at a glance and deeper reflection. With art typically encountered on short visits to museums and galleries, viewing experiences are often dictated by temporal and spatial concerns. Exploring themes of absence, materiality, and anxiety, the works in the show can be seen to negate, and even ignore, the ideas beneath the surface.

On view in the THE UPPER ROOM, Reading the Surface is the second in a series of curated shows which supplement the annual program at David Zwirner with smaller, intimate presentations featuring the gallery’s artists and beyond. The exhibition is curated by Associate Director Rodolphe von Hofmannsthal.

LUC TUYMANS | THE SUMMER IS OVER

The Summer is Over coincides with the publication of Luc Tuymans: Exhibitions at David Zwirner, 1994-2012 (Ludion). Opening with a conversation between the artist and Zwirner, this catalogue spans their history and includes exceptional reproductions of so many of the now iconic works, installation views, exhibition checklists, and personal photographs. Other texts include individual interviews Lynne Tillman conducted with art critic Peter Schjeldahl; artist Brice Marden; art historian and academic Robert Storr; and together with Helen Molesworth and Madeleine Grynsztejn, co-curators of Tuymans’s recent major U.S. retrospective.
